DEC Holding Cormorant Meeting Now is the time to voice your opinion

Central New York residents are invited to voice their opinions on cormorants at two public meetings scheduled by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in February.

The sessions will be held at the Sheraton University Hotel, 801 University Avenue at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13. For those closer to Watertown, a session will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12th at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown; same 7 p.m. start time.

These are two of 10 hearings which the Fish and Wildlife Service has planned across the nation to evaluate new proposals to control expanding cormorant populations in the Great Lakes region and elsewhere.

DEC studies have shown that cormorants nesting in eastern Lake Ontario have eaten as many as 1.3 million smallmouth bass in a single year. Flocks feeding in Oneida Lake consume roughly the same number of adult walleyes as fisherman take.

If you can't attend the upcoming hearings, send a written message on the subject of cormorants to the Division of Migratory Bird Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 4401 N. Fairfax Drive, Room 634, Arlington, Va., 22203. Submissions can also be made via the Internet, at cormorant\eis@fws.gov, or via facsimile machine at (703) 358-2272.

Matt Martin Wins RedMan Regional
Second Salt City member to win major tournament
Matt Martin competing in his first Red Man Regional tournament on NY's Chautauqua Lake was able to claim the $50,000 first prize package of a new Chevy Silverado and new Ranger 518 bass boat, after bringing 21 lbs. 13 ozs. of smallmouth bass to the scales (5 fish limit).

Matt caught his fish on scattered rock piles, mixed in larger milfoil beds. He used his favorite spider grub to catch 11 + pounds on day one and 18+ pounds on day two to best 120 other anglers and qualify for the tournament finals. On the final day of competition the weights are set back to zero for the top 10 qualifiers.

There were plenty of anxious moments as the last 4 anglers brought in 20+ pounds sacks of smallmouths to the scales.

After all was said and done, Salt City's own Matt Martin stood a top the field. This win, enables Matt to fish against 50 other anglers in the REDMAN ALL-AMERICAN ($100,000 Cash First Prize).

Excellent job Matt.

Matt is the second Salt City member to claim the winners circle on a prestigious tournament trail. You may recall Randy Yager, became the first New York resident to win a B.A.S.S. tournament at Lake Ocheechobee two years ago.

Rusczyk Reels in First Salt City Victory

Salt City
Bassmaster's Oneida Points Tournament was held September 30th out of South Shore launch site. A calm cool morning with water temps in the low to mid 60s greeted the 34 anglers. Thirteen members brought limits to the scales and a total of 232+ pounds of bass were weighed making it one of the best tournaments of the year. Dave Rusczyk's 16 lbs. 3 oz. topped the field when all the fish were weighed. Dave slow rolled spinnerbaits and fished softplastics in an isolated area for an estimated 25 keeper fish.
Matt Martin fishing his first club tournament of the year was not disappointed with 15 lbs. 12 oz. and second place. Matt caught smallmouths on tubes early and then upgraded with jig and pig largemouths later in the day. Third place honors went to Bill Kooi with a 13 lbs. 14 oz. limit of Oneida smallies. Partnered with tournament winner Rusczyk, Bill used tubes to work the same school of fish. Bob Mabee returned from the B.A.S.S. regional in Virginia in time to collect fourth place with 12 lbs. 13 oz. Bob fished white Senkos for a nice bag of smallmouths. Rounding out the top five was Pat O'hern who managed 12 lbs. 11 oz. on a gold spinnnerbait. Lunker award goes to Joe Noffey who used a chrome/blue rattletrap to bag a 4 lb. 12 oz. largemouth.
This ended the point tournament season for 2001. The end of the year results will soon be available. Thanks to all for another successful year.

1000 Isl. Tournament,Aug. 26th 2001Strong gusting winds blew most of the day making boat control very difficult for all 15 boaters and their partners. Fishing for the most part was typical of the 1000 Islands – a lot of short fat fish and no real pattern to follow. Harry Stewart finished in 1st place with a nice bag of 5 largemouths weighing in at 13 lbs. 5 ozs., Harry caught his fish in shallow weeds and shoreline wood using Top water baits, Spinnerbaits and Plastic Worms. In 2nd place was Craig Terpening with 5 largemouths weighing 11 lbs. 6 ozs., Craig reports his early patterns didn’t produce so he went to docks and found quite a few fish willing to bite his flippin tube. In 3rd place is Joe Koetting with 4 largemouths weighing 10 lbs. 3 ozs., Joe says he caught all his fish on soft plastics (wonder what kind??) on shoreline wood and weeds – watch out if Joe ever starts putting that 5th fish in the bag! In 4th place we have Pete Anderson with 5 largemouths weighing 9lbs. 14 ozs., Pete caught a couple early on Top Water and then went to deep weed lines with a Jig & Pig to finish out his limit. Pete banged up his boat on the Hudson River and so Dick Wescott let him use his boat and Dick went along as a non-boater. Lunker was caught by 1st year club member Jack Harrington , a largemouth weighing 4 lbs. 3 ozs.

Salt City Returns with 13th Place Finish From NYS BASS Fed CTE, Cusano Bags Day Two Lunker
Despite excellent practices at Chautauqua Lake and a team concept Salt City Bassmasters managed just 13th place out of 28 teams in the New York State B.A.S.S. Federation Club Team Event. The team was lead by the solid two-day performance of 21.72# by team captain Pete Anderson. Pete caught the majority of his fish by slow rolling a spinnerbait through weeds. Club President, Mike Cusano used a 3/8 oz. Texas rigged, green pumpkin tube to catch the day two lunker of the event, a 4.98# largemouth. Mike also managed second position for the club with a two-day total of 16.84#. Larry Hopkins ( 11.89#), Joe Spicer ( 10.44#), Chris Bowes (9.74#), and Ron Kelly (5.15#) all contributed to the final 75.78# that the club finished with. All club team members had a tremendous time and appreciate the opportunity to represent the club. Be sure to ask “Muskie” Mike Cusano to tell his his big fish story the next time you see him.

The overall team winners were Southern Tier Bassmasters with 117.63#, followed by Rochester Bassmasters with 111.34#, Sothwestern Bassmaster 110.39# and Crown City Bassmasters 99.24#. All these top teams should be congratulated on their fine performance. All the results are available on the NY BASS Federation web site. See you at 1000 Islands.

Anderson Wins at Cayuga, Makes It Two in a Row.

The 36 anglers who fished the July 29th Cayuga found tough mid-summer conditions and only 10 limits were managed. After all the fish had been weighed, Pete Anderson again was at the top of the field. Pete fished mainly a shallow jig and pig presentation to achieve his 14 lbs. 15 oz. winning weight. Second went to Craig Terpening with 13 lbs. 1 oz., including the tournament lunker a beautiful 4 lbs. 1 oz. smallmouth. When Craig's early shallow water bite let him down, he turned to deep weed edges with a tube bait to boat a limit in the last few hours of competition. Club President Mike Cusano was third with 12 lbs. 15 oz. caught deadsticking a soft plastic jerkbait in the 6-8 foot around scattered weeds. Roger Stahl was fourth with 12 lbs. 9 oz. bag of largemouths. Roger caught his fish on a variety of baits and different depths all within sight of the launch. Eric Barker ended up in fifth with a solid limit of 12 lbs. 6 oz. Next Points Tournament is scheduled for August 26th at 1000 Islands and the season concludes at Oneida Lake on September 30th.

2000 Angler of the Year Pete Anderson Returns to Winning Ways

On Sunday, July 15th Salt City Bassmasters’ 42 anglers were greeted with sunny skies and light winds. A brief sun shower and increasing winds forced many to abandon their early patterns. In the end, Pete Anderson topped the field with a mixed bag of lake smallies and bay largemouths. Anderson took advantage of the early morning flat lake and presented tube baits to catch a limit of smallmouths. Then he and partner Ron Kelly turned to docks with a jig and pigs in the afternoon. This combination provided Pete with his 13-lbs. 4-oz. winning weight. Bob Mabee finished second by methodically fishing a plastic worm at the 7-8 ft. depths in the weeds. Bob caught a late day 3 pounder and was able to upgrade his catch to 11-lbs. 1-oz. Last years Sodus winner; Craig Terpening managed 10-lbs. 9-oz. and a respectable third place tie. Craig fished tubes on the weed edges in 10 – 12 ft. This was the same pattern as last year win. The other half of that third place tie was Ron Kelly. Ron managed to work the dock jig and pig bite into a 10-lbs. 9-oz. limit of largemouths? His catch included the 3 lbs. 10 oz. tournament lunker. Rounding out the top 5 was Bill Jackson who had a 9-lbs. 15-oz. limit of lake smallmouths. For all the standings go to the results section of the site. The next points tournament for the club is Cayuga Lake on July 29th.

Wed. Night Tournaments
Thanks to the efforts of Tournament Director Chris Bowes, the Wednesday Night Tournaments on Onon. Lake have been a HUGE success. At the 1st Wed. night Tourn. there were 9 boats and it took over 13 lbs. to win – the 2nd Tourn. had 17 boats entered and it took over 11 lbs. to win – there was no Tourn. the week of the 4th of July – last weeks Tourn. had 19 boats entered and a weight of over 10 lbs. was needed to take home the money. Reports are everyone is catching fish both in the lake and in the river. A Fisheries Biologist from Onon. County was at the 1st Tourn., he tagged and released all the fish brought to the scales that night for future studies. Dates for the upcoming night Tournaments can be found by following the links at the NYSBCF Web Site.

Cusano Redfield winner, Non boater, O'hern holds off the rest for overall victory
Day two, Redfield Reservoir brought more sun and smaller fish. Eleven members brought in limits with the average fish weighting 1 lb. 9 oz. Lunker on day two went to Steve Stefanko with a 3 lbs. 11 oz. largemouth. Club president , Mike Cusano fished a jig and pig in shallow brush and was rewarded with a 12 lbs 1 oz. limit including a couple of 3 1/2 pound beauties for the victory. Joe Koeting was second with 9 lbs. caught fishing floating worms around flooded timber. Ron Kelly took third place honors. Ron used his “go to bait” a black and blue jig and pig in shallow cover. Bob Mabee and Craig Terpening finished fourth and fifth respectively with 8 lbs. 10 oz. and 8 lbs. 6 oz. Both fished soft plastics for limits.

At the end of the Two Day Tournament Pat O’hern cashed in on his Sandy Pond win and a solid second day at Redfield (6 lbs. 8 oz.) for a two day total of 23 lbs. and 12 oz. and the overall victory. Ron Kelly who was the boater partner for both days winners finished second overall with 21 lbs. 12 oz. Larry Hopkins was third (20 lbs. 8 oz), Joe Spicer was fourth (19 lbs. 6 oz.) and Bob Mabee ended up fifth (18 lbs. 15 oz.). With 41 members fishing it was a great start to the 2001 Salt City Bassmasters Points Tournament Trail. Be sure to come to the next meeting on July 12th to sign up for Sodus and Cayuga and here more specifics about these tournaments.

Casting Kids Volunteers Needed
East Syracuse Chevy to host
As you all know Chevrolet trucks are a major sponsor of our grandparent organization B.A.S.S., and we have been contacted to assist and also to qualify two more kids for the NYS Casting Kids finals.

East Syracuse Chevy has offered to host/promote a casting kids contest on Saturday, July 28th from 1pm - 3pm. What they need from us are at least two more volunteers (besides myself) to work with the kids to show them how to FLIP, PITCH, and CAST (what I want to know is who's going to show me!).

Obviously, the more volunteers the better. I also understand this is the heart of tournament season, which is why they are hosting and promoting it. We basically need to show up around noon (to help finalize set up), work with the kids, and/or do the scoring if we have enough volunteers.

If you can help out, please contact Mike Cusano at 695-4969.

THANKS!!!!

Club Rookie, Mike Sharlow "Jerks" in Walleye Win ! Bright sun, warm temperatures and light winds greeted the field of 22 anglers on May 20th, 2001. This terrific turnout doubles the previous year’s numbers of entries in the Annual Walleye Tournament. At the end of the day 15 anglers brought fish to the club’s new digital scale for weigh-in. Salt City rookie Mike Sharlow took first place honors with a weight of 7 lbs. 15 oz. He fished jerkbaits in 5-10 feet over emerging weeds. He also collected the lunker purse with a 3 lbs. 15 oz. beauty. Club “young gun” Dave Rusczyk managed second with a limit of nice Oneida walleyes weighing 7 lbs. 9 oz. Jigs tipped with worms were the key for Rusczyk. Tournament Director Chris Bowes squeeked out a third place finish. Bowes caught his 7 lbs. and 5 oz. limit on suspending jerkbaits. Rounding out the top five were Terry Hopkins with 7 lbs. 3 oz. and Larry Arnold with 6 lbs. 8 oz. who fished hair jigs for limits. Great start to another tournament season!

Club Projects for 2001 Season
Busy year planned for our active membership
Salt City is looking to do some youth, conservation, and even some house cleaning activites for the year 2001.

On the youth front, Salt City is going to be holding a casting kids contest on April 28th, at long time club sponsor, FREMAC MARINE, in Lakeport, NY. This will be the club's first casting kids contest in over 6 years (at least). We are very excited about the opportunity of working with the youth of central NY.
More noteable, Salt City is going to operate a program: "REELING in the YOUTH", where club members are asked to donate old fishing rod and reel combinations. A local organization will be presented with the collected equipment to promote the sport of fishing to the youth in our community.
For every rod/reel combination donated a member receives a raffle ticket. Before every tournament drawing, a ticket will be pulled, and the winner will receive a free entry into a tournament of his/her choice.

After meeting with the Dept. of Drainage and Sanitation we have offered our assistance in setting fish holding habit/boxes throughout various locations in Onondaga Lake. The group is in the process of securing the grant for this project, so if all pans out, we should know by May 17th.

Lastly, several members (Dick Wescott, Dave Celi, Ed Flick and Terry Hopkins) have volunteered to design and rebuild our club's SPORTSHOW BOOTH, in order to give it a more contemporary look. Along, with the new look, they plan on adding additional features to make it more transportable and useable.

As you can see we have a lot to do besides fishing to keep us busy.

Excellent turnout and support guys... PLEASE KEEP IT UP!!

Onondaga Lake's Future Looks Brighter, Thanks to the Department of Drainage and Sanitation
Mastriano and crew talk about bass and other notables
Special thanks to Joe Mastriano and his crew, Nick Capoza and Chris Gandino for taking the time to meet with Salt City this past Thursday, April 5th, at the club's monthly meeting.

The group handed out some very interesting reading on the clean up efforts and progress being made at Onondaga Lake. Besides the handouts, they discussed some basic water chemistry, changes they have seen in Oxygen levels, various species and sizes of fish, and the zebra mussel impacts/populations.

News to the group was that a zebra mussel can filter a quart of water/day and that the entire lake water is filtered approximately every 4 days by these voracious bi-valves, but don't look at that as a good thing. While filtering that much water, zebra mussels also excrete a similar amount of waste into the water. This waste robs the lake of much need Oxygen as it breaks down.

With the help of the Dept of Drainage and Sanitation they hope to improve the water quality of the lake while at the same time managing the needs of the city and surrounding areas.

Also, this past year was their first year of electroshocking fish for statistical analysis. How about a 15 lb. Northern Pike, 6+lb. Largemouth Bass, 5 lb. Smallmouth, and 12 lb. Walleye to tell you that the lake's fish population is doing well. Besides these popular game fish, Onondaga supports 54 different species of fish, including Brook and Brown Trout.

Several club members have offered to keep fishing diaries on their trips to Onondaga Lake and Senaca River. With this information the group hopes to better understand how to improve conditions on the lake. If you'd like a diary, please contact Joe at (315) 435-2260.

Lastly, Joe and company took time to answer all of the club's questions.

Great Time Had By All At 2nd Annual Awards Banquet
Pete Anderson strains back carrying his awards
February 10, 2001 was the date of Salt City's 2000 Awards Banquet and although I didn't think it was possible there was more food than last year.

Everyone had a great time and got to enjoy a wide variety of dishes. Turn out at this year's banquet was exceptional as 57 members and their families attended.

Pete Anderson was the big winner and rumor has it that he may have hurt himself carrying home all his plaques... (we can only hope he misses a few tournaments next year).

Suprise award winner was Joe Koetting, who garned the Most Improved award (after Pete graciously declined it, due to not fishing enough tournaments last season).

Thanks to Craig Terpening and Ron Kelly for bringing additional tables/chairs.

Also the club owes a debt of gratitude to Denise and Bob Mabee for coordinating the food and setting up the room. Not to mention the nice cookies with the bass boat in the middle. Too bad it has an OMC on it. Bob also donated his time and money to develop and print out the paper certificates to the first through fifth place finishers.

THANKS AGAIN!!

Hope to see you next year... maybe we can have the Dinosaur cater it!!

Club Banquet February 10th
Looks like even more food than last year
Only a few more days until the club will be holding its 2nd annual awards banquet. The jury is still out, but we just may have more food than last year... so be ready to eat and drink. Free beer, wine, and soda will be served.

Hope to see you all there... the jury is still out but club president, Mike Cusano, may actually be healthy this year. Although, his son just came down with a bug.

Keep your fingers crossed... and take your EKUNASIA (spelling?).
