Please Sign the Ontario Federation's Petition
Ontario's version of the DEC is forcing a bass limit reduction
The Ontario, Canada BASS federation is asking for people to sign their petition protesting a reduction in the bass limits.

The reason they are protesting this reduction is due to a lack of any formal studies being done to determine if bass populations need to even be protected. This limit reduction will hurt the area financially as it is a popular tourist community. The Ontario federation is calling for an official study on the bass populations before they will support such a limit reduction.

Please take 5 minutes and support the Ontario federation by going to the below site: http://www.thefishingnews.com/MinisterOuellette.shtml

We as bass anglers need to support each other, and I would like to see the entire Salt City membership support this group!

NYSBCF Cancels 2003 Hudson River Tournament
So if you've made reservations go ahead and cancel
Due to a scheduling mix-up, the New York State B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation July 13, 2003 Hudson River tournament has been canceled.

Never fear, the date will remain the same, just the location will be different.

As of now the tournament committee hasn't finalized a location yet. So please keep an eye on the NYSBCF website for further information.

As soon as I become aware of the new tournament location, I'll make sure to let you all know.

RSVP for the NYSBCF Awards Banquet Before January 4th
Even if you purchased a raffle ticket
On January 18th, the New York State B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation will be holding its annual awards banquet. This years site will be at the LeMoyne Manor in Liverpool, NY.

The Federation is asking all attendees to RSVP to NYSBCF Secretary, Rose Maher, before January 4th. So even if you purchased a raffle ticket for the NYSBCF bass boat (or $20,000 cash) give-away, you still need to RSVP letting them know you will be attending.

Rose can be reached either by emailing at f.maher@mail.ci.westfield.ma.us or by calling (413) 442-2656 .

Raffle tickets cost $100, but will allow you free entry into the banquet. The banquet cost for those who didn't purchase a ticket is $25/person. So for another $75, you can have a 1 in 500 chance at a new boat (or $20,000) or second prize of $2,500.

My advice, if you are going to the banquet anyway find a way to purchase a raffle ticket (or have someone go in on a ticket with you).

If you are interested in a raffle ticket please contact me at 695-4969.

Hope to see you there.

MORE NEWS

NYSBCF Bass Boat Raffle – anyone still wanting a ticket contact Mike Cusano @ 695-4969. Ticket price is $100.

All Club members are asked to go to the NYSBCF’s Web site and sign a petition against reducing the Ontario, Canada bass limit to 3 fish per boat. Especially since no studies have been done to determine if this is a necessary practice.

Joe Mastriano and his crew @ the Onon. County Dept. of Water Enviroment Protection have applied again for a Grant to build “artificial reefs” made of concrete. These would be placed in Ononadaga Lake as fish habitat, our Club has offered its support in this undertaking if the money is appropriated.

Mike Cusano took a survey of Club members @ the Dec. meeting on Federation issues being posted on the Fed. Web site, they included: Tournament Off limits, Standings based on Points and or Pounds, Boater / co-boater, Tournament Schedule based on other Circuits such as “BFL”, Mike will be posting these results on the Fed. Web site.

Chaumont Bay Tournament

Mike Cusano claims his 2nd Tournament win of the season (from the back of the boat, both times) with a mixed bag, 1 Smallie and 4 Largemouths weighing 15 lbs. even, Mike used Tubes and Senkos to catch his fish, Mike caught on a rock hump in 6 ft and in thin weeds with rock and sand, his presentation was very slow. In 2nd place was Craig Terpening, also with a mixed bag, 2 Smallies , 3 Largemouths weighing 13 lbs. 10 ozs., Craig caught on a Senko in 10+ ft of water in weed pockets. 3rd place had Curtis Waterman bring 4 Smallies and 1 Largemouth weighing 13 lbs. 7 ozs. to the scales, Curtis caught on Hard Jerk Baits and Senkos in 12+ ft with rock & weeds. Joe Spicer who fished with Curtis came in 4th with 12 lbs. 6 ozs., Joe had 5 Smallies. Lunker was caught by Mike Cusano, a Largemouth weighing 4 lbs. 4 0zs..

Mike Sharlow came in 3rd with 5 Largemouths weighing 12 lbs. 8 ozs. , Mike caught on Tubes and Senkos in 2-10 ft of water with rock & weeds. 4th place saw Joe Spicer bring 5 Largemouths to the scales weighing 11 lbs. 12 ozs., Joe caught on Tubes and Senkos in 2-10 ft of water. Catch the Future Scholarship Money Due at November Meeting
Individual raising the most money will win a year's worth of tournament entries
As a reminder, all angler's that participated in Salt City Bassmaster's "Catch the Future" fish-a-thon to raise money for the New York State B.A.S.S. Chapter Federations scholarship program, need to bring their checks/cash to the November 7th Salt City meeting.

In particular, money raised by Salt City will be specifically slated for existing college students who meet the NYSBCF eligibility requirements.

As a bonus, Salt City is offering a "prize" to the angler that raises the most money in support of this cause: a year's worth of free tournament entries (bass points tournaments only).

Again, please bring your checks/cash to the November 7th meeting. If possible please try to have checks made out to NYSBCF and in the memo section put "CATCH THE FUTURE" or "Scholarship Fund".

Salt City Bassmasters can take donations after this date; however, as mentioned at the October meeting, only money received by November 7th will count towards determining the contest winner.

Thanks to all who supported this project!!

Fire Up the Engraver
Bowes claims 2002 Angler of the Year
When I was a kid I often wondered why I needed to learn all this different math stuff. Well now I know why: so I can figure out the club's point standings.

And while no one will ever accuse me of being a "rocket scientist" (we know who that is), I am smart enough to realize the Salt City tournament director, CHRIS BOWES has accumulated enough points in the Angler of the Year race that he can take the next two tournaments off.

On the strength of 2 first place, 1 second place, and 1 third place finish, Bowes has mathmatically eliminated the rest of the field from catching him.

So tell the engraver to fire up the machine cause CHRIS BOWES is SALT CITY BASSMASTERS 2002 ANGLER of the YEAR.

CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!!

September 26, 2002
TWO-DAY TOURNAMENT SIGN UP
Encouraged to do in person, but if can't contact Cusano or Noffey
As always it is prefered that club members sign-up for tournaments in person, but with other commitments we know this isn't always possible.

So if you have to contact someone in regards to getting on the tournament list for either Chaumont Bay (Oct. 5th) or 1000 Islands (Oct. 6th) please contact either Mike Cusano or Joe Noffey. Club tournament director, Chris Bowes will NOT be available until after the sign up deadline has passed.

If you know of any members that planned on fishing but couldn't make the meeting, please let them know of this change.

Additional information: Cost for both tournaments will be the standard $25 per tournament (or $50 for both). You may sign up for one tournament, but should understand that we will be paying back the top 10 places for the combined two-days of weight. Lunker will pay back $5/person each day.

Points race for the club 6 person team is very tight with 4 spots remaining, 1 secured and 1 99% secured. There are about 10 individuals who could fill up the remaining 4 spots. So good luck to all.

LASTLY: Don't forget about the club's "CATCH the FUTURE" NYSBCF scholarship fund raiser. The individual that raises the most money will win a year's worth of free entries (bass points tournaments only).

Let's show the federation what Salt City can do when we put our minds to it!

Cusano Makes 2003 State Team
Terpening just misses in his rookie season
Whoever said timing is everything must have been a bass angler. With less than 5 minutes of fishing time left and a very small limit in the boat, Mike Cusano and his boat partner, Vic Johnson, made one last stop on Mike's primary spot. Five pitches of a Bass Pro Shops flipping tube produced one 2 1/2 lb. smallmouth bass that was the difference in allowing Salt City's Club President, Mike Cusano, the opportunity to fish in his first Eastern Divisional next season.

Mike brought a limit to the scales that weighed 8.32 lbs and secured the 8th spot on the divisional team.

Mike wanted to express his sincere thanks to Vic Johnson, of Black Rock Bassmasters for giving up his time and allowing Mike to fish his water.

Standing in 33rd place overall prior to the start of the final federation event, Craig Terpening made a huge charge in order to try and qualify for the divisional team in his NYSBCF rookie season. Craig brought a limit of smallmouth in that weighed 13.41 lbs that garnered him 11th place for the tournament.

(continued below)

September 19, 2002
Terpening comes close
Matt Martin another strong year
(cont...)

Craig came within a 1 1/4 lbs. of qualifying for the divisional team and finished in 12th place overall. While Craig was happy with his overall season, he was some what disappointed because he had the qualifying fish on his line 3 different times.

Still an exceptional first season.

Salt City placed 3 anglers in the top 20 as Matt Martin wound up 18th on the overall state list. Matt said he lost a couple of fish that would have helped put him on the team. Try not to feel too sorry for Matt. Matt has proven himself an excellent angler making numerous divisional teams and winning the NYSBCF Angler of the Year in 1999. So you know he will be back.

As a club, Salt City wound up in 6th place well behind new club champion, Rochester Bassmasters. Rochester dethroned the perennial powerhouse team of Statewide.

Check out all results on the NYS Federation page by clicking on LINKS in the upper left corner.

Wanted to thank all the Salt City anglers for participating on the NYSBCF trail. We had fantastic support from the club and you should all be commended.

B.A.S.S. announced at the 2002 Bassmaster's Classic that our parent organization the New York State Bass Chapter Federation was chosen to receive the B.A.S.S. Federation of the Year award.

This is an outstanding achievement, and all NYSBCF members should be very proud of this. Please take a moment and go to the NYS Federation website (click on Links, upper left to take you there), and read what President Tomassi has to say about it.

Congratulation to all of you, for it is your effort in the club that make the federation what it is today...

IMPORTANT: Meeting Date Changed to AUGUST 8TH
Make sure you don't violate offlimits for Cayuga tournament
REMINDER: The Salt City meeting that would of taken place on August 1st, has been changed to August 8th. This was because our Salt City Club team will be practicing on Lake Champlain for the NYSBCF Club Team Event.

When the club reunites on August 8th, we will be doing a tournament drawing for the Cayuga Lake tournament on August 11th. Because this is an unusual timing of events, please make sure you do not accidently violate the club's offlimit rules by being on Cayuga Lake after midnight on Sunday, August 4th.

As always, if you can't make the meeting and wish to participate please contact the tournament director, CHRIS BOWES beforehand. Also, make sure you let him know whether you will be fishing as a boater/non-boater.

Can't wait to head to Ticonderoga and see if we can pound some of those big largemouth!!

Wish your team luck!!

See you on the 8th...

PVA Tournament Canceled
Due to lack of contestants, not support
Ken Anderson, PVA tournament organizer, has just put a message out on the NYSBCF website canceling the Cayuga Lake PVA tournament.

He especially thanked Salt City Bassmaster's for their support in this project, unfortunately due to some miscommunications there were not enough PVA contestants rounded up to make this a worthwhile event.

Hopefully things will work out for next year. I am very proud of the club's willingness to get involved with this worthwhile cause and am confident that Salt City Bassmasters will do the same next year.

Thanks again!!

Mike Cusano has 7 tickets left for the Bass Boat Raffle being held by NYSBCF.

At the NYSBCF Tournament on Chautauqua, June 16th, the Club had 13 Members fishing, Ron Kelly was the Clubs top finisher, Salt City is currently in 8th place overall.

It was suggested at the July Meeting that "bottled ice" be used in the Live Wells for up coming Tournaments to help prevent the number of dead fish we had at the Oneida Lake Tournament.

Matt Stevens and Mike Cusano both won free entries into Tournaments for their Rod and Reel donations.

Because of Larry Hopkins's withdrawl from the CTE, Joe Koetting is now on the Six Man Team and Bill Kooi will be the 2nd alternate.

Tournament Director Chris Bowes reports that the Wed. Nite Tournaments are doing quite well - 10 Boats the 1st nite and 14 boats the 2nd Nite.

The Club currently has 56 paid Members.

See next article below for Oneida Lake Tournament story and go to "Results" menu for more info on who finished where.

Tournament Results

Pratice time paid big dividens for Tournament Director Chris Bowes at our recent Tournament on Oneida Lake. Chris and his partner Dave Celi both had limits of Smallies very early in the morning and then went to Chris's big fish spot and culled with some nice Largemouths. Top Water baits did in the Smallies and Tubes caught all the Largemouths. Chris's winning weight was 16lbs. 9ozs. Chris also took Lunker with a 4lb. 8oz. Largemouth. Roger Stahl finished in 2nd place with a limit of Largemouths weighing in at 14lbs. 12ozs. Roger caught all of his fish in shallow water on Soft Plastics. 3rd and 4th place finishers were partners Joe Spicer and Keith Cardinale. Joe weighed in 13lbs. even, all Smallies and Keith weighed in 11lbs. 13ozs, also all Smallies, they both caught on Tubes all day. There were 38 Anglers fishing this Tournament and 26 limits brought to the scales. Everyone caught at least 1 fish to weigh in. A bright point at this Tournament was that Dicks Sporting Goods and WSEN Oldies 92 Radio donated $500.00, this was divided up among the top 10 finishers with each receiving a $50.00 Gift Certificate to Dicks Sporting Goods. A down side to the Tournament was that 19 fish died before the weigh in - this problem was discussed at the Club Meeting and all live wells will be iced down for our up coming Tournaments, hopefully this will resolve the problem!

Huge Salt City Contigent at NYSBCF Event
Ron Kelly leads all Salt City members, while Bill Kooi claims "FRY GUY" title
Thirteen Salt City members made the 4+ hour trip down to fish in the New York State Bass Chapter Federation's opening tournament held at Chautauqua Lake.

Ron Kelly, who brought 5 bass in weighing 14.31 lbs was the highest Salt City finisher and finished in 12th place overall at this event. He won $211 for his effort.

As a club, Salt City's top three anglers, Kelly, Erik Barker, and Mike Cusano weighed a combined 36.25 lbs. However, we are currently in 8th place overall and almost 10 lbs. behind Rochester Bassmasters.

Bill Kooi fishing in his first state event captured Salt City's dubious award: The Fry Guy. Bill only caught one fish weighing 1.62 lbs. Must be Bill's partner was too busy driving his Allison 90 mph to show Bill how fast it would go! Keep on plugging Mr. Kooi.

Also, the club had its share of mishaps on the trip down. Bill Kooi, blew a tire and drove on his rim 40 miles or so before realizing it. Craig Terpening lost his entire trailer wheel after the lug nuts loosened up.

So before you trail anywhere go check your lug nuts with your wrench!!

See you at Oneida!!

NYS Dept. of Drainage Shares Angler Findings
Onondaga Lake has great catch rate
In the past when someone mentioned Onondaga Lake, images of a giant toilet bowl would pop into most peoples heads. This was one of the most polluted lakes in the nation.

Well, thanks to the hard work of groups like the New York State Department of Drainage and Sanitation (NYSDDS), images of giant bass and walleye will pop up when Onondaga Lake is mentioned.

NYSDDS employees, Joe Mastriano and Nick Capoza, gave a brief synopsis of Onondaga Lakes health. Based on their findings the angling forecast for Onondaga Lake is looking fantastic.

The last year's angling diaries revealed a catch rate of 3.4 keeper bass/hour. Any fisheries manager or bass angler worth the salt on their Senko's will tell you a catch rate of 3.4 keeper bass/hour is exceptional.

In addition to the angling diaries, the NYSDDS conducted nest counting and electrofishing to help round out their statistical analysis. First time observations of smallmouth bass nesting, was especially noteworthy.

One sour note, is that while fish are reproducing the odds of their young reaching adulthood are less than in other lakes. The NYSDDS attributes this to a lack of cover for the young of the year (YOY) fish to hide.

To try and increase the recruitement of the YOY fish, the NYSDDS has once again applied for a state grant to enhance the fish habitat. The grant calls for the purchase of man-made fish boxes, that will allow the YOY fish a chance to hide from the numerous gizzard shad in the lake.

Once the grant has been secured, the Salt City membership has committed to helping the NYSDDS place these fish boxes.

Thanks to Joe and Nick for taking the time to stop by.

If you haven't gotten your 2002 Angling Diary, please do so!!

NYSBCF Boat Raffle Tickets
Bring your money to assure yourself a ticket
Several Salt City members have expressed an interest in purchasing a NYSBCF boat raffle ticket. I only have a limited number of tickets and these will be sold on a first come first serve basis. So if you want to ensure yourself a ticket, you should consider bringing a check or cash to this coming meeting.

There are 9 tickets left and I know of at least 7 people that have already expressed an early interest, and the club is planning on buying a ticket or two. So my advice is get your money in as quickly as possible.

Our next meeting is April 4th. Hope to see you there.

Reminder: Get Club Dues Paid
The 2002 fishing season is fast approaching, so for those existing members that have not yet paid your club dues please get your $60 into either Wally O'hern or myself.

Also, if you have a B.A.S.S. subscription that has lapsed that must be kept current in order for you to receive the National B.A.S.S. insurance benefits during the tournament season. So keep those memberships current as well.

Our club membership is growning rapidly, already have 39 paid members. With membership growing so large, we as a club may want to discuss limiting the number of Salt City members.

NYS Dept. of Drainage and Sanitation to Discuss 2001 Anglers Diary Results
Volunteers needed for 2002 program
At the April 4th Salt City Bassmaster meeting, Joe Mastriano and crew will be going over the data collected by Salt City members and other participants in Onondaga Lake and the neighboring Seneca River during the 2001 season.

The data is used to help determine the overall fishing health of these two bodies of water.

I'm sure the results will be very entertaining to see. Plus, members will have the opportunity to sign up for the 2002 Angling Diaries program.

Hope to see you there.

Salt City to Rewrite History
Or at least officially document it
Any one with old Salt City Bassmasters records is asked to step forward with either copies or old documentation. If you'd like we can copy the documents for you and return them.

Salt City Bassmasters is one of the oldest bass clubs in the New York State Bass Chapter Federation. If you are a past member or know of past members with access to old tournament records, club information, or photos please contact Mike Cusano, (315) 695-4969.

If you have the opportunity, feel free to attend a club meeting (meeting times are same as always: first Thursday of every month at Rapheal's in Lakeland 7:30pm). I'm certain the new members would love to meet you and hear some of the old stories.

Some items Salt City members hope to establish would be a complete tournament listing of top 3 finishers, weights and lunkers. Also to comprise an accurate listing of a variety of tournament records, ie. Heaviest Bass, Heaviest Winning Weights, Most Angler of Years, Most Tournament Wins, etc....

The only way Salt City can make this happen is with information provided by prior members. If you have a chance to speak with some of the "old timers" please let them know about this project.

Lastly, don't worry if the information isn't organized. Just bring us a box of stuff and we will sort through it.

THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE.

Time Out to Fish Receives Donation from Salt City
Hope to continue promotion of fishing in New York State
Salt City Bassmaster members realize that the youth of today are the future sportsmen and women of tomorrow. Programs like the Carpenter's Brook Hatchery's Time Out to Fish provide several benefits to these youths. By teaching children how to fish, providing children with means to fish, and exposing the children to the joyous feeling associated with catching a fish, this program is building future sportsmen and women for New York.

On Tuesday, March 19th, Salt City Bassmasters' president, Mike Cusano, presented to Steve Wowelko of the Friends of the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery a large collection of donated fishing rods and reels. The Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery will use these fishing rods and reels for their Time Out to Fish program.

Throughout the 2001 fishing season, Salt City members received a ticket for each donated rod/reel combination. Those tickets were put into special drawings for a free tournament entry, which was done prior to each tournament's partner selection. Special thanks to the overwhelming support by Salt City members for this program.

Lastly, it was a pleasure to meet with the Friends of the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery and to hear that they share many of the same concerns as other sporting groups throughout NY, and that they are taking action to address those concerns. Keep up the good work!

I'm very proud of our membership for bringing this about... please think of other worthwhile projects.

NYSBCF Tournament Director, Pam Bliss to Step Down
After end of 2002 season
At the March 17th, NYSBCF meeting federation president, Wayne Tomassi announced that tournament director, Pam Bliss, will be resigning after the 2002 NYSBCF Award Banquet.

Pam has been tournament director for 3 seasons and has done a wonderful job of automating the draw process, book keeping, organizing, and dealing with countless pain in the butt anglers (myself included).

While we are saddened to see Pam step down, Wayne reminded us all that these things happen and someone from in the ranks will have to step up and perform.

When fishing the federation trail this year, please make sure to let Pam know how much you've appreciated her help.

Good luck Pam!!!

NYSBCF Tournament Advisory Board Rules on Open Items
CTE and youth decisions reached
two part story...
At the NYSBCF's Spring Meeting on March 17th, Pam Bliss presented the NYSBCF's Tournament Advisory Board (TAB)decisions on several issues raised throughout the previous season.

The TAB is comprised of Ted Barth, Rose LaValley, Chris Loftus, Joe Matt, Stephanie Miura, Mark Ventra, and the NYSBCF Tournament Director, Pam Bliss.

Meeting on February 24, 2002, the TAB tackled a variety of issues. Below is a summary of the issues and the TAB's findings:

CTE PRACTICE/PARTICIPATION: Approved letting two alternate anglers from each club practice during the two official practice days.
- Official alternates must be on official CTE roster before start of practice period
- Minimum of one participant (angler or official alternate) per boat
- CTE designated helpers allowed to fish on practice days (will not divulge any tournament information to participants)
- CTE designated helpers (who are not designated alternates) allowed to fish on tournament days but they must yield to anglers that are participating in the tournament and will not divulge any tournament information to participants)
- Club's alternates are not allowed to fish on tournament days, except in case of replacing existing team member
- Once the tournament has started non-participants will not divulge any tournament information to participants.
- No participant may solicit or take advice from any non-competitor once the official tournament off-limits has started.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO SALT CITY
The first and second alternates will be allowed to practice with the club team if they wish to. Congratulations to Joe Koetting and Pat O'hern for qualifing as first and second alternates, respectively. For both of them this would be their first trip to a CTE.

NYSBCF Tournament Advisory Board ....
continued from above

Modify CTE State Team Qualifiers: Proposal was to change qualifiers to top two overall regardless of how their team faired. TAB voted to NOT CHANGE qualifying process and keep it focused on top angler from top two teams.

Local Expert: Defined as an individual who has received compensation directly related to that body of water within the past 12 months, including but not limited to: a guide, bait-shop owner, fisheries biologist, tournament competitor who cashed a check, etc... Again, it has to be on that specific body of water.

Fog Procedure: If there is fog potential tournament will have a mandatory set speed limit of 30 mph on lake until a specific time. The length of the madatory speed limit will be set by the TAB and minimum will be one hour.

Youth Participation at CTE: TAB voted to not allow the Junior Federation to send a "team" to the CTE.

Youth Participation on Points Trail: Issue was to allow Junior Federation members (16 to 18 yrs old) option to participate as non-paying members who would not compete for prizes only points on the Jr. Federation. TAB voted to NOT ALLOW this type of participation.

Boat-check pre-send off: Will continue to try and check boats at ramp or other designated area... will process improve as time goes on.

Voice of tournament angler: Done in order to better server tournament anglers. Added new email address to Website (TAB@nybassfed.com). Assigned TAB member to specific club and notify clubs about their representative.
