CLUB DUES ARE COMING DUE
Remember only members paid before January 8th can remain exempt from the non-boater/boater ratio

Reminder: This year the club enacted a membership rule that requires the club to maintain a 60/40 ratio of boaters to non-boaters.

An exemption was put in that stated any member in 2003 that pays his/her dues on/before the first club meeting in January (January 8th in 2004) are exempt from the ratio. SO IF YOU WANT TO AVOID PROBLEMS, it is recommended that you sign up at either the December meeting or the January meeting. If you sign up after that and you are a non-boater, you run the risk of not being able to get into the club.

Club dues paid before January are $55. Dues paid in January or later are $60 for all re-newing members. Brand New members are $55 at anytime of the year (provided the boater/non boater ratio is not exceeded).

Your $55 includes your Salt City dues of $20, your New York State BASS Chapter Federation (state) dues of $20, and your national Bass dues (insurance) of $15.

IN ADDITION: You must be a BASS member. This is done by subscribing to BASSMASTER magazine. Maintaining your membership to BASS is your responsibility and is NOT included in your club dues. Please make sure your BASS membership is current. If it is not, you are technically not covered by National Bass. SO IF YOUR MEMBERSHIP HAS LAPSED PLEASE RENEW IT TODAY.

When you go to renew with Salt City please have your BASS membership number handy.

Officer Nominations at the September Meeting
Any club member is eligible to be nominated or to nominate themselves
If you check your club by-laws you will see that September is the month that Salt City Bassmasters accepts officer nominations for the positions of President, Vice-President/Secretary, Tournament Director, and Treasurer. And this year we will also be looking for a Youth Coordinator.

As many of you know these positions require work and dedication and several of the officers have been doing the job for quite some time. We all appreciate their dedication to the club and many have seen their workload increase significantly as the club has grown from 18 members to 74 members over the years.

Now is the opportunity for you to step up and make a difference in the club. If you aren’t happy with something or just have a different approach to things, you have an opportunity to nominate yourself (or be nominated).

Those officers that are elected will have the following year’s dues paid for (meaning the year after your elected term will be paid by the club).

Officer elections will be Thursday, October 2nd.

Remember this is your club and the best way to keep things going the right way is to be involved.

Salt City Finishes 15th at 2003 NYSBCF Club Team Event
CTE Rookie Cardinale high man on team
The eight members representing Salt City Bassmasters at the 2003 NYSBCF CTE worked very hard to develop solid patterns for the tournament. Members divided the river up into sections and all reported back what areas held fish, what areas didn’t, and what the hot baits and techniques appeared to be. From there a ground work was laid for what each participant would do during the event.

However, when all was said and done, it was our club’s neighbors: Crown City and Port City that took the coveted 1st and 2nd place spots. Crown City brought in 118.74 lbs and Port City managed 112.96. Each team qualified one man for the 2004 Eastern Divisional, with Joe Matt (Crown) and Ken Bracey (Port) earning those positions. Congratulations to those teams and the individuals, they definitely deserved it!

Salt City members managed 88.10 lbs. Club CTE rookie, Keith Cardinale, was the team’s top weight getter with 19.62 lbs.; Mike Cusano followed with 19.55, and Joe Spicer had 19.21 (even though he spun a hub first thing in the morning on Day 2). Following them was Eric Barker (12.20), Craig Terpening (9.79) and Chris Bowes (7.74). Chris earned the dubious “FRY GUY” award. Which while he was disappointed about his performance should feel good knowing he helped put his teammates on some fish.

In addition team alternates Ron Kelly and Steve Houseknecht worked very hard to scout water. They had found fish in other areas that the team was planning on using for Day 2 (mechanical problems and cooperating fish kept some of us from getting there).

2003 CTE (continued)
Check the NYSBCF website for all the results (www.nybassfed.com) , under TOURNAMENTS.

Some of the more interesting things we learned is that Chris Bowes shouldn’t drink more than 6 beers (upon returning back to the room) after being out in the sun all day as it tends to slow him down on the second practice day. Mike Cusano is not at all thrilled about sharing his room with bats. Keith Cardinale made several long time NYSBCF anglers feel very old when they realized Keith was the little kid that used to tag around when his parents fished the NYSBCF trail. Joe Spicer learned that when swimming you don’t want to step on the rocks that have zebra mussels. Eric Barker has more snacks than the Wegman’s snack isle (must be Mrs. Sardinia-Barker is busy “nesting” in preparation for their upcoming arrival). Lastly, Craig Terpening hates the “STENKO” and still has the fastest boat in the Federation (even when compared to the 85mph Triton).

A good time was had by all… special thanks to Ron Kelly for getting the shirts embroidered. We may not have caught fish, but we sure looked like we could!! Special thanks to our club sponsors: Fremac Marine, Costello, Cooney, and Fearon, PLLC, Syracuse.Com, Truax and Hovey, Ponderosa Steak House, All State Insurance, Wagner Millworks, Manlius Mobil, Manlius True Value, Manlius Motorworks, KC Signs, and NAPA (donated the shirts).

Terpening Rolls with it to Win Chaumont
Rookie angler takes Second
While driving up route 81 tournament anglers were greeted with fog in some low lying areas. This usually means little to no wind; however, somewhere between the Watertown off ramp and the Chaumont launch the winds decided to pick up. Anglers saw a stiff SW wind blowing that was already creating 3-4’ rollers at 5:00am.

Oh well, such is the life of the tournament angler. Conditions though bad, were not enough to consider moving to an alternate location. So anglers had to grin and bear it. The angler who did the best job “rolling” with the waves was Craig Terpening who brought in a limit of largemouths weighing 14 lbs. 3 ozs. Craig who was a bridesmaid at Chaumont last year, made sure to do it right this year.

Second place went to Sam “No-Need-to-Work-Tomorrow” Squadrito, a club rookie and one of our youngest members at 16 years old. Sam brought in the tournament lunker a 4 lb. 1oz. largemouth that helped him towards a 13 lb. 12oz. bag. Sam was disappointed to learn that the checks wouldn’t be presented until the next meeting. Guess you need to go to work tomorrow?!!

Third was a tie between Scott Allen and Sean Heitman, both managed limits weighing 11 lbs. 8 ozs.

To hear the winning patterns and tournament recap, please come to the club’s next meeting at Hooligan’s off of route 57, across from the Flamingo Bowl on Thursday, August 7th at 7:30 pm.

See you there!

Martin Off to Decent Start at BASS Potomac Open
Currently in 23rd Place

Club member Matt Martin is off to a good start after day one at the BASS open on the Potomac River. Matt caught a limit of bass weighing 14 lbs. even.

The Potomac is the first tournament in the BASS Northern Open Trail, and is a critical element towards any angler making the Bassmaster's classic. Let's hope Matt gets off to a strong start on the trail.

Go to http://espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/s/tourn_03_north_open_MD_day1.html

Good luck Matt!!

NYSBCF Holds Second Points Tournament
Oneida Lake makes claim to be 7th Great Lake
On Sunday, July 13th, Oneida Lake tried very hard to solidify its unofficial hold as the 7th Great Lake (we know Lake Champlain is unofficially called the 6th Great Lake). Four to five foot breaking waves greeted the 202 contestants the morning of the second New York State B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation’s point tournament.

Dennis Cumiskey caught a limit of bass weighing 18.09 lbs. and club member, Mike Wall took 2nd place with 16.20 lbs which earned him a healthy $1,515. However, Mike has dual club membership status with Rochester Bassmasters, and has Rochester listed as his primary club so his weight is awarded to that club for overall club standings. Nice job anyway, Mike (we could of used your points!!).

The highest Salt City finisher was Joe Spicer, with 11.96 lbs. Craig Terpening brought 11.63 lbs. to the scales, and Mike Cusano brought 11.43 lbs. in to round out the club’s top three.

The club had 13 members fish the tournament, and all 13 brought at least one fish to the scales.

Special thanks to Dave Celi, Andy Dolch, Joe Noffey, and Andrew Sgarlata for assisting the NYSBCF tournament crew with weigh-in and fish release.

Don’t forget about Chaumont Bay, this weekend. IF YOU HAVE ANY BOAT PROBLEMS, PLEASE CONTACT MIKE CUSANO as club tournament director, Chris Bowes is on vacation until Friday.

See you at Chaumont.

Win New Bass Boat or $20,000 Cash
NYSBCF to hold 2nd bass boat raffle

Last year many anglers waited till the last minute to purchase a raffle ticket to take a chance at winning a fully loaded bass boat, mainly because they didn’t think the raffle would take place. Ask Frank and Melody Tennity what they think of last years raffle and I’m sure all you’ll have to do is look at their new bass boat and smiling faces!

So, this year the NYSBCF will again be offering a bass boat: Triton TR-186DC w/ Mercury 175 EFI or a Skeeter ZX 190 w/ Yamaha 175 VMAX. Both include trolling motor and electronics….. or if a boat isn’t for you how does $20,000 sound.

Second prize is $2,500 and the change to this years drawing is that 25 cash prizes will be pulled for $100 AND those tickets will be put back in the pot to still be eligible for the 2nd or grand prize. Ticket cost is $100. That also gets the purchaser FREE ENTRY to the 2003 Awards Banquet (which is approximately $30).

So you have a shot at making your money back PLUS winning a big money prize!

If you think you can sell some tickets, or just want to buy a ticket or two please contact Mike Cusano at 695-4969. The club AND individual that sells the most gets $200; the club AND individual that sells the grand prize gets $200 each; and the club AND individual that sells the 2nd prize ticket gets $100 each.

So lets start pushing the tickets.

PS: I’ll have tickets available at the Salt City Meeting on July 10th.

2003 Starts Out Like 2002
Bowes wins Oneida and takes lunker

Fifty anglers got to watch the 2002 Salt City Angler of the Year, Chris Bowes, keep his hot streak alive by winning and taking lunker at Oneida Lake, Sunday June 29th. To refresh your memory that is exactly how Chris started the club’s points trail last year. Chris found some cooperative smallmouth to start with and then culled with a 5 lb. 3 oz. largemouth which earned him tournament lunker and a total weight of 15 lbs. 11 oz.

Congratulations Chris!! For those of you who think fishing is about luck, realize that Chris has won 3 tournaments out of the last 7 he fished and finished in the top 5 for two others. Nobody is that lucky!

2nd and 3rd place came out of the same boat: the Bob Mabee Stratos that sometimes doubles as a kiddie pool. Mabee caught a limit that went 13 lbs. 6 ozs. and his partner, the ultimate non-boater, Mike Fragola reeled in 13 lbs. 2 ozs worth of bass.

Club rookie, Jacob Volcko, staked an early hold on the club’s Rookie of the Year race with a limit weighing in at 12 lbs. 11 ozs. That’s now two tournaments in a row that he has cashed a check. Very good start.

A good number of fish were caught, many appeared to be post-spawn. Come to the club’s meeting on July 10th (moved due to July 4th Holiday) to hear the top anglers tell us how they caught their fish.

Remember if you can’t make the meeting and want to fish Chaumont Bay on July 20th, you need to contact a club officer prior to the meeting on July 10th.

2003 NYSBCF Lake George Opener
Eight Salt City members make the trip to George

While we had a smaller than normal Salt City contingent at the New York State B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation’s Susan B. Johnson Opener on Lake George (June 22nd), I’m very certain a good time was had by all.

The bass were in a pre-spawn to just spawning pattern and were for the most part more difficult to catch than in years past. Still someone always manages to catch them. Bill Lyons, Jr. of Port City Bassmasters won the tournament with 14.33 lbs and also caught a 4.67 bass to take lunker. First place netted him $2,410 and lunker an additional, $1,085.

The clubs top 3 anglers were Mike Cusano, 11th place with 11.33 lbs, Craig Terpening, 41st place with 9.07 lbs., and Joe Spicer, 85th place with 7.72 lbs. All Salt City anglers caught at least one fish, with Steve Houseknecht taking the Fry Guy award with 1 fish weighing 0.92 lbs. For those of you not familiar with Lake George, that fish Steve caught is typical of what is known as a “LAKE GEORGE LIMIT FISH”: 5 fish that weigh under 5 pounds.

Salt City members that made the trip were Cusano, Houseknecht, Ron Kelly, Bill Kooi,
Dom Maio, Tom Pavlot, Spicer, Craig Terpening.

Special thanks to Bill Kooi for grilling some outstanding chicken and to Ron Kelly for supplying some Oneida Lake walleye fillets! While we may not have done the best at Lake George when it came to the fishing, we ate the best out of anyone there!!

Don’t forget Oneida Lake NYSBCF will be on July 13th, application deadline is June 28th to avoid the $25 late fee.

This is our home lake so I’d like to see a huge Salt City turn out!!

June 29th, Start of SALT CITY BASS SEASON
Oneida to kick it off

On June 29th, Salt City will have the largest tournament fields in documented club history: 26 boaters and 26 non-boaters. In that field are over a dozen Salt City Rookies, so expect a “heated” Rookie of the Year race in 2003.

Being that many are new and that this is our first bass tournament of the year I want to take this opportunity to remind you all of a few things:

If you are a non-boater please bring the following items: LIFE JACKET , rain gear, food/drink for yourself, a watch (is also good) and your fishing equipment (also don’t forget your non-boater fee). Life Jackets are to be warn anytime the combustion motor is running (please check the tournament rules).

Boater and non-boaters should plan on being at the ramp early on because 26 boats will take some time to get loaded. Launch is 5:00am, blast off is 6:00 am. Weigh-in will be at 2:00pm. NOTE: If you are not 100% comfortable with backing in or parking a trailer, or running a trolling motor TELL YOUR BOAT PARTNER or Tournament Director . There are plenty of anglers that can and should be able to assist your boater. Boaters please make sure you ask your partner if they are comfortable with all operations of loading and unloading, DO NOT ASSUME THEY ARE!!

(continued below...)

June 17, 2003
Salt City Starting (cont.)
(continued from above)

Because of the potential congestion, please do not wait in line at the ramp. Only get in line if you are ready to launch. If you sense your partner may be running late, let the Tournament Director know and we will assist you with the launch. Basic idea is to get the boats in and “CHECKED”. Craig Terpening and Chris Bowes will be checking livewells and “kill switches”.

REMEMBER YOUR ICE (frozen Gatorade bottles work well) to keep your fish alive.

HAVE FUN and LEARN… this is what club bass fishing is for. No one is going to be getting a million dollar sponsorship by winning a Salt City tournament. Not to say you can’t learn enough to eventually get that sponsorship!

Mike Wall “BREEZES” to Victory
Wins 2003 Walleye Tournament
Typically Salt City Bassmaster members use the club’s annual walleye tournament to test their boats and new equipment. The 2003 walleye tournament allowed some testing of other things as well: boat driving skills and rain gear. Oneida Lake was unusually nasty with a very steady and gusting east wind that caused some boats to act more like submarines and swimming pools. Fortunately everyone survived and more importantly a good time was had by all.

Mike Wall was able to catch 2 very nice walleyes that exceeded the 18” Oneida Lake minimum and weighed a very healthy 7lbs. 0ozs. In second place was club walleye guru, Ron Kelly with 2 fish weighing 5 lbs. 10ozs. Jim Arnold cashed his first (and second) Salt City checks after he caught a beautiful 4 lb. 13 oz. walleye that not only gave him third place but also lunker. Club rookie, Jacob Volcko rounded out the top 4 with one walleye weighing 3 lbs. 14 ozs.

Congratulations to all for an exceptional performance under tough conditions. For all the details please make sure you attend the June 6th meeting. We will also be signing up for the club’s first bass points tournament at that time.

Other notable events: Bob Mabee demonstrated to his rookie partner, Doug Herbert how a bass boat doubles as a kiddie-pool and the importance of wearing rain gear even if it doesn’t look like it will rain. Unless Doug had waders on he wasn’t going to keep his feet and legs dry with water pooled up to his lap after Bob tried driving through a wave instead of over it.

Livewells have taken a huge step forward, and in the future they may be called “HAPPY-Wells” thanks to Larry Arnold’s creative thinking. Larry’s custom painted livewells feature a wrap around mural of weeds and rocks guaranteed to make even the most depressed walleye (and eventually bass) happy to be in his boat.

B.A.S.S. Comes to Oneida Lake For a Northern Open Oct. 2nd - 4th
For the first time ever, B.A.S.S. will be holding an event on Oneida Lake. This will be part of the three tour Northern Open Tournament Trail.

The Northern Open Schedule looks like this:
July 17 - 19th: Potomac
Sept. 11 - 13th: Lake Erie (Buffalo,NY)
Oct. 2 - 4th: Oneida Lake (Oneida Shores Park)

I was fortunate enough to meet with the coordinators of this event and Dewey Kendrick of B.A.S.S. They are counting on our club and the NYSBCF's support in assisting with the weigh-in, tear down, and other such duties.

We will need volunteers (20+) per day and possibly 5 - 6 to help tear down. Volunteers will mostly be used for fish care. I believe youngsters can do it (over 12) but will give more information as I receive it.

In addition, B.A.S.S. is looking to borrow a Pontoon Boat (preferably with overhead canopy/cover) for blast off and flag collection on the return. If you know of anyone who has access to such a boat, please contact me immediately. Boat does not have to be the most beautiful, only functional with a 25HP or larger motor.

We need to make sure that we work very hard to have this be an enjoyable experience for all parties. It is our hopes to make Oneida Lake a regular stop.

Who knows, maybe someday we can hold a classic weigh-in at the Carrier Dome!!

Salt City Meeting Today, Make Sure You Go to the Western Ranch
Crankbait expert, Craig Terpening to present
Not that I think bass anglers are dense, I just know that old habits are hard to break, and I consider twenty years of using the same location to hold meetings an "OLD HABIT".

So make sure you come to the Western Ranch Motel. If you haven't already, you should consider getting your club dues paid as soon as possible.

Also, if you have any sponsorship money please bring that with you as April is our deadline for gathering sponsors.

See you at 7:30.... get there early and have a drink (soda or beer) and some "CHICKEN TINGS" (my personal favorite).

NYSBCF Tournament Advisory Board Makes Some Rule Changes for 2003 Season
Experimental offlimit season enacted for 2003
At the NYSBCF Executive Board Meeting on March 2nd, new tournament director Sharon Green announced the results/decisions on rule changes for 2003 reached by the 5 person Tournament Advisory Board (TAB). Keep an eye on the new TAB webpage for complete details.

First rule change will impact the traditional off limit period. Starting with the 2nd tournament of the NYSBCF season (Oneida Lake) off limits will be as follows. For the 2003 tournament season only, beginning with the 2nd tournament, off limits will be from midnight Sunday preceding the tournament until noon on the Friday prior to the tournament.

So that means the official practice period has been moved from Saturday at safe light, to Friday at NOON. You will still be allowed to practice on Saturday as you have done in the past.

Second rule change: The practice period CLOSES at 4 p.m. on the day prior to the tournament . This means you have to be off the water at 4 p.m. on Saturday, used to be 3 p.m. Re-Registration will still be from 3 to 5 pm.

Third rule change: Failure to register in person during the designated hours shall result in a penalty of ONE POUND. Used to be a .30 /pound penalty.
