Officer
Nominations at the September Meeting
Any club member is eligible to be nominated
or to nominate themselves
If you check your club by-laws you will see that September is the month that
Salt City Bassmasters accepts officer nominations for the positions of
President, Vice-President/Secretary, Tournament Director, and Treasurer. And
this year we will also be looking for a Youth Coordinator.
As many of you know these positions require work and dedication and several of
the officers have been doing the job for quite some time. We all appreciate
their dedication to the club and many have seen their workload increase
significantly as the club has grown from 18 members to 74 members over the
years.
Now is the opportunity for you to step up and make a difference in the club. If
you aren’t happy with something or just have a different approach to things,
you have an opportunity to nominate yourself (or be nominated).
Those officers that are elected will have the following year’s dues paid for
(meaning the year after your elected term will be paid by the club).
Officer elections will be Thursday, October 2nd.
Remember this is your club and the best way to keep things going the right way
is to be involved.

Salt City
Finishes 15th at 2003 NYSBCF Club Team Event
CTE Rookie Cardinale high man on team
The eight members representing Salt City Bassmasters at the 2003 NYSBCF CTE
worked very hard to develop solid patterns for the tournament. Members divided
the river up into sections and all reported back what areas held fish, what
areas didn’t, and what the hot baits and techniques appeared to be. From there
a ground work was laid for what each participant would do during the event.
However, when all was said and done, it was our club’s neighbors:
In addition team alternates Ron Kelly and Steve Houseknecht worked very hard to
scout water. They had found fish in other areas that the team was planning on
using for Day 2 (mechanical problems and cooperating fish kept some of us from
getting there).
story continued below
2003 CTE
(continued)
Check the NYSBCF website for all the results (www.nybassfed.com) , under
TOURNAMENTS.
Some of the more interesting things we learned is that Chris Bowes shouldn’t
drink more than 6 beers (upon returning back to the room) after being out in
the sun all day as it tends to slow him down on the second practice day. Mike
Cusano is not at all thrilled about sharing his room with bats. Keith Cardinale
made several long time NYSBCF anglers feel very old when they realized Keith
was the little kid that used to tag around when his parents fished the NYSBCF
trail. Joe Spicer learned that when swimming you don’t want to step on the
rocks that have zebra mussels. Eric Barker has more snacks than the Wegman’s
snack isle (must be Mrs. Sardinia-Barker is busy “nesting” in preparation for
their upcoming arrival). Lastly, Craig Terpening hates the “STENKO” and still
has the fastest boat in the Federation (even when compared to the 85mph
Triton).
A good time was had by all… special thanks to Ron Kelly for getting the shirts

Oh well, such is the life of the tournament angler. Conditions though bad, were
not enough to consider moving to an alternate location. So anglers had to grin
and bear it. The angler who did the best job “rolling” with the waves was Craig
Terpening who brought in a limit of largemouths weighing 14 lbs. 3 ozs. Craig
who was a bridesmaid at Chaumont last year, made sure to do it right this year.
Second place went to Sam “No-Need-to-Work-Tomorrow” Squadrito, a club rookie
and one of our youngest members at 16 years old. Sam brought in the tournament
lunker a 4 lb. 1oz. largemouth that helped him towards a 13 lb. 12oz. bag. Sam
was disappointed to learn that the checks wouldn’t be presented until the next
meeting. Guess you need to go to work tomorrow?!!

Win New Bass
Boat or $20,000 Cash
NYSBCF to hold 2nd bass boat raffle
Last year many anglers waited till the last minute to purchase a raffle ticket
to take a chance at winning a fully loaded bass boat, mainly because they
didn’t think the raffle would take place. Ask Frank and Melody Tennity what
they think of last years raffle and I’m sure all you’ll have to do is look at
their new bass boat and smiling faces!
So, this year the NYSBCF will again be offering a bass boat: Triton TR-186DC w/
Mercury 175 EFI or a Skeeter ZX 190 w/ Yamaha 175 VMAX. Both include trolling
motor and electronics….. or if a boat isn’t for you how does $20,000 sound.
Second prize is $2,500 and the change to this years drawing is that 25 cash
prizes will be pulled for $100 AND those
tickets will be put back in the pot to still be eligible for the 2nd or grand
prize. Ticket cost is $100. That also gets the purchaser FREE ENTRY to the 2003
Awards Banquet (which is approximately $30).
So you have a shot at making your money back
PLUS winning a big money prize!
If you think you can sell some tickets, or just want to buy a ticket or two
please contact Mike Cusano at 695-4969. The club AND individual that sells the
most gets $200; the club AND individual that sells the grand prize gets $200
each; and the club AND individual that sells the 2nd prize ticket gets $100
each.
So lets start pushing the tickets.
PS: I’ll have tickets available at the Salt City Meeting on July 10th.

Bowes wins Oneida and takes lunker
Fifty anglers got to watch the 2002 Salt City Angler of the Year, Chris Bowes,
keep his hot streak alive by winning and taking lunker at Oneida Lake, Sunday
June 29th. To refresh your memory that is exactly how Chris started the club’s
points trail last year. Chris found some cooperative smallmouth to start with
and then culled with a 5 lb. 3 oz. largemouth which earned him tournament
lunker and a total weight of 15 lbs. 11 oz.
Congratulations Chris!! For those of you who think fishing is about luck, realize
that Chris has won 3 tournaments out of the last 7 he fished and finished in
the top 5 for two others. Nobody is that lucky!
2nd and 3rd place came out of the same boat: the Bob Mabee Stratos that
sometimes doubles as a kiddie pool. Mabee caught a limit that went 13 lbs. 6
ozs. and his partner, the ultimate non-boater, Mike Fragola reeled in 13 lbs. 2
ozs worth of bass.
Club rookie, Jacob Volcko, staked an early hold on the club’s Rookie of the
Year race with a limit weighing in at 12 lbs. 11 ozs. That’s now two
tournaments in a row that he has cashed a check. Very good start.
A good number of fish were caught, many appeared to be post-spawn. Come to the

The bass were in a pre-spawn to just spawning pattern and were for the most
part more difficult to catch than in years past. Still someone always manages
to catch them. Bill Lyons, Jr. of Port City Bassmasters won the tournament with
14.33 lbs and also caught a 4.67 bass to take lunker. First place netted him
$2,410 and lunker an additional, $1,085.
The clubs top 3 anglers were Mike Cusano, 11th place with 11.33 lbs, Craig
Terpening, 41st place with 9.07 lbs., and Joe Spicer, 85th place with 7.72 lbs.
All

I want to take this opportunity to remind you all of a few things:
If you are a non-boater please bring the following items: LIFE JACKET , rain gear, food/drink for
yourself, a watch (is also good) and your fishing equipment (also don’t forget
your non-boater fee). Life Jackets are to be warn anytime the combustion motor
is running (please check the tournament rules).
Boater and non-boaters should plan on being at the ramp early on because 26
boats will take some time to get loaded. Launch is

Because of the potential congestion, please do not wait in line at the ramp.
Only get in line if you are ready to launch. If you sense your partner may be
running late, let the Tournament Director know and we will assist you with the
launch. Basic idea is to get the boats in and “CHECKED”. Craig Terpening and
Chris Bowes will be checking livewells and “kill switches”.
REMEMBER YOUR ICE (frozen Gatorade bottles work well) to keep your fish alive.

Mike Wall
“BREEZES” to Victory
Wins 2003 Walleye Tournament
Typically Salt City Bassmaster members use the club’s annual walleye tournament
to test their boats and new equipment. The 2003 walleye tournament allowed some
testing of other things as well: boat driving skills and rain gear.
Mike Wall was able to catch 2 very nice walleyes that exceeded the 18”
Congratulations to all for an exceptional performance under tough conditions.
For all the details please make sure you attend the June 6th meeting. We will
also be signing up for the club’s first bass points tournament at that time.
Other notable events: Bob Mabee demonstrated to his rookie partner, Doug
Herbert how a bass boat doubles as a kiddie-pool and the importance of wearing
rain gear even if it doesn’t look like it will rain. Unless Doug had waders on
he wasn’t going to keep his feet and legs dry with water pooled up to his lap
after Bob tried driving through a wave instead of over it.
Livewells have taken a huge step forward, and in the future they may be called
“HAPPY-Wells” thanks to Larry Arnold’s creative thinking. Larry’s custom
painted livewells feature a wrap around mural of weeds and rocks guaranteed to
make even the most depressed walleye (and eventually bass) happy to be in his
boat.
