Carl Moore Unstoppable on Cayuga
The Salt
City Bassmasters held their third points tourney at
Carl
Moore figured this
In 2006, Carl again solidified that he knows Cayuga. Carl brought in a bag of four fish at 8 pounds 9 ounces. He did this on a day that more than half of the field of 40 anglers failed to bring in a single keeper. Carl’s fish came on a sharp drop off between a shallow and mid-depth shelf. There were sparse weeds over a gravel bottom and his area was loaded with bait. He was running a Rapala X-Rap from shallow to deep over the drop at a fast pace. Carl also took a fish deep cranking in a bout 20’. Mr. Moore also had Lunker at just over 3 pounds. Too bad for Carl, I get the feeling that Cayuga will not be fished again by us for a few seasons.
In Second
Place and high non-boater was Tom Pavlot
with three fish at 6 pounds even. Pavlot also did well here last year, winning the Cayuga
club event as a non-boater. Tom fished
with Eric Barker and credits Eric for being a great boater. TP got his fish in 8’-12’ with some healthy
weeds. One was on
Third Place went to Club Rookie Derek Terpening with 3 Largemouth at nearly 5 pounds. The young Terpening cashed his first check in just his third Club event – look out guys. Derek worked a tube bait in 17’. Derek says that all of his bites came when his bait hung up on a weed and he was shaking the bait. He used an internal rattle and 3/8 oz of weight to get it down. Derek was in good hands with his uncle Craig at the controls of the Bullet- who also got a top ten finish.
In Fourth Place was Howard Krause. Krause had two fish that went 4# 3 oz. taken in 6’ over thick weeds. Krause threw everything in his Skeeter at these fish until he came across his buzzbait box. Krause said it was “years” since he’s thrown one, but he pried the box open and tied one on – only because nothing else was working. Right off the bat, he took his two fish on the white bait. He didn’t stick with it long though, he said “I stopped because it was too noisy, it was bothering me.”
Fifth Place went to Non-Boater Joe Maloof. Joe cashed his first check of year weighing in two fish at 3 pounds 10 ounces. Joe found his fish in the BFL event in mid July where everyone else pretty much bombed here. His fish moved out a touch deeper from their July location, to about 15’. The area had scattered clumps of weeds with some deeper water nearby. Joe whacky rigged a 3” Senko, and fished it on a drop shot rig. Maloof may have done better if we didn’t waste time on my water. Joe’s also looking good for NBOY after this strong finish and with Chaumont up next. Joe knows Chaumont. He finished in Second up there last year with 14 plus on 4 fish.
At the mid point of the season, the AOY race looks tight at the top, with Krause, Lamanche, Cusano and Grady all bunched up. The NBOY is also up for grabs – though Maloof put himself in contention- if not the lead- with his fishing at Cayuga.
