Paul Ruterman earns first victory ever at Chaumont Bay

Long time club member Paul Ruterman secured his first regular season victory during Salt City Bassmasters opener on Chaumont Bay. Paul fished a fluke and a variety of other moving baits to fill his limit early in the day.  Paul picked up fish all day long despite the heavy downpours and having his line float up in the air due to electrical charge. Paul didn’t let the pending electrical storm rattle him too much as he was able to dead stick a worm to pick up four quality fish within the last hour of the day.  The fish, including a beautiful 5 lb smallmouth and 4.5 lb largemouth on successive casts gave Paul and his boater/netman/guide Patrick Grady a great show of pure power and acrobatic skills. Paul’s fish came out of rock and weed in about two to eight feet of water. Paul’s five fish weight a very respectable 17 lbs 12 ounces.

Second Place went to Randy Lamanche.  Randy knew the bags were going to be huge when the top water bite was on in the morning.

Randy caught a solid limit of smallmouth early on top water and tubes and crank baits.  He then upgraded with three solid largies with tubes in deeper weeds. Randy’s five fish tipped the scales at 17lbs 7 ounces.

Third place and lunker went to Josh Phillips.  Josh fished a drop shot rigged with a poor boy goby to get all his fish including the 5 lb six ounce tournament lunker largemouth.  Josh picked up his fish from two to ten feet of water with scattered weeds and rock.  Josh’s limit went 16 lbs even.

Charles Pritchard “drops” in on the 1000 Islands

Charles Pritchard was not able to fish Saturday at Chaumont Bay.  He showed up Sunday well rested and with smallmouth on his mind.

With the majority of the river bass having the post spawn blues Charles was able to drop shot a very good bag of 13 lbs 14 ounces.  For most of his fish Charles drop shotted his Goby baits in depths of fifteen to thirty feet in order to pick up his limit of smallies in the main river channel. He added to his limit with a drop shotted 5” senko and 3.5” inch tubes.

Starting out the year strong again, two-time Angler of the Year Randy Lamanche finished in second yet again.  Randy used tubes in eight to eighteen feet of water to coax his 13 lb 7 ounces of smallmouth into the boat.  Randy also gathered tournament lunker with a 4 lb 5 ounce smallmouth that looked more like a football than a Bass.

Third place went to defending 1000 Islands Champion Ralph Alexander.  Ralph pitched texas rigged Sweet Beavers with one quarter ounce weights.  Ralph targeted the fish in weed pockets at depths of four to ten feet of water to get his 12 lb 9 ounce bag of largemouth.

Two Day Champion – Randy Lamanche

With two great second place performances, Randy Lamanche earned the honors of 2 Day Champion.  Randy knew he had to be on the offense on the second day as several of the top place finishers on Chaumont Bay had excellent knowledge of the 1000 Islands.  Paul Ruterman has a home in the thousand Islands and Ralph Alexander was the reigning 1000 Islands Champion. In addition, Josh Phillips, Carl Moore, and Steve Balyszak can all be dangerous competition.  Knowing that the two pound average fish he had found in practice would not suffice, Randy worked hard to target specific areas of the river where large smallmouth might be in for the spawn. The strategy paid off and Randy had a two day aggregate of 30 lbs 14 ounces which is believed to be a modern day club record.

Second Place in the two day went to Ralph Alexander.  Ralph also had solid finishes on both days to bring in a total of 27 lbs 2 ounces of fish.  Third place went to Paul Ruterman.  Paul got all the bites he needed on the 1000 Islands as his fish were in.  However, the hookup ratio was not there and the big bites slipped away.  Paul’s third place bag went 25 lbs 8 ounces.
