Mike Wall Ends Season Like He Started It

The first Salt City tournament of the year is the club’s walleye tournament… Mike Wall won the May 2003 event with jerkbaits.  That same pattern would help Mike win the club’s last tournament of the year at Owasco Lake.  Mike caught the tournaments only limit and weigh in 8 lbs. 13 ozs.  Mike’s five bass outweighed club rookie, Tony Viglietta’s 3 bass by 12 ozs.  (8 lbs. 1 oz.).  Tony’s effort was good enough for 2nd place.  2 other club rookies rounded out the top 4:  Randy Lamanche and Jacob Volcko.

The tournament lunker was caught by Dave Rusczyk a 5 lb. 13oz. behemoth that apparently became dazed and confused enough to bite on this otherwise very difficult fish catching day.  Of the 43 anglers that fished, 22 failed to catch even one keeper fish.  That is tough fishing no matter where you are.

Carl Moore Wins first Tournament
Wind forces second day of the two-day to be canceled

Harry Stewart came in 2nd with 3 Largemouths weighing 10 lb. 9 oz., Harry caught on a Spinnerbait and Senko around bridge pilings and in shallow open water, his weight included a 5 lb. 9oz. lunker fish. Jack Harrington finished 3rd with 5 Largemouths weighing 10 lb. 2oz., Jack fished Senkos and Plastic worms in 4 – 8 ft of water with weeds, rock and stick ups. Craig Terpening had 4 Largemouths weighing 10 lb. 1 oz. for a 4th place finish, Craig caught on a deep diving crankbait in 20+ ft. of water over milfoil.

Terpening Rolls with it to Win Chaumont
Rookie angler takes Second
While driving up route 81 tournament anglers were greeted with fog in some low lying areas. This usually means little to no wind; however, somewhere between the Watertown off ramp and the Chaumont launch the winds decided to pick up. Anglers saw a stiff SW wind blowing that was already creating 3-4’ rollers at 5:00am.

Oh well, such is the life of the tournament angler. Conditions though bad, were not enough to consider moving to an alternate location. So anglers had to grin and bear it. The angler who did the best job “rolling” with the waves was Craig Terpening who brought in a limit of largemouths weighing 14 lbs. 3 ozs. Craig who was a bridesmaid at Chaumont last year, made sure to do it right this year.

Second place went to Sam “No-Need-to-Work-Tomorrow” Squadrito, a club rookie and one of our youngest members at 16 years old. Sam brought in the tournament lunker a 4 lb. 1oz. largemouth that helped him towards a 13 lb. 12oz. bag. Sam was disappointed to learn that the checks wouldn’t be presented until the next meeting. Guess you need to go to work tomorrow?!!

Third was a tie between Scott Allen and Sean Heitman, both managed limits weighing 11 lbs. 8 ozs.

To hear the winning patterns and tournament recap, please come to the club’s next meeting at Hooligan’s off of route 57, across from the Flamingo Bowl on Thursday, August 7th at 7:30 pm.

See you there!

2003 Starts Out Like 2002
Bowes wins Oneida and takes lunker

Fifty anglers got to watch the 2002 Salt City Angler of the Year, Chris Bowes, keep his hot streak alive by winning and taking lunker at Oneida Lake, Sunday June 29th. To refresh your memory that is exactly how Chris started the club’s points trail last year. Chris found some cooperative smallmouth to start with and then culled with a 5 lb. 3 oz. largemouth which earned him tournament lunker and a total weight of 15 lbs. 11 oz.

Congratulations Chris!! For those of you who think fishing is about luck, realize that Chris has won 3 tournaments out of the last 7 he fished and finished in the top 5 for two others. Nobody is that lucky!

2nd and 3rd place came out of the same boat: the Bob Mabee Stratos that sometimes doubles as a kiddie pool. Mabee caught a limit that went 13 lbs. 6 ozs. and his partner, the ultimate non-boater, Mike Fragola reeled in 13 lbs. 2 ozs worth of bass.

Club rookie, Jacob Volcko, staked an early hold on the club’s Rookie of the Year race with a limit weighing in at 12 lbs. 11 ozs. That’s now two tournaments in a row that he has cashed a check. Very good start.

A good number of fish were caught, many appeared to be post-spawn. Come to the club’s meeting on July 10th (moved due to July 4th Holiday) to hear the top anglers tell us how they caught their fish.

Remember if you can’t make the meeting and want to fish Chaumont Bay on July 20th, you need to contact a club officer prior to the meeting on July 10th.

Mike Wall “BREEZES” to Victory
Wins 2003 Walleye Tournament
Typically Salt City Bassmaster members use the club’s annual walleye tournament to test their boats and new equipment. The 2003 walleye tournament allowed some testing of other things as well: boat driving skills and rain gear. Oneida Lake was unusually nasty with a very steady and gusting east wind that caused some boats to act more like submarines and swimming pools. Fortunately everyone survived and more importantly a good time was had by all.

Mike Wall was able to catch 2 very nice walleyes that exceeded the 18” Oneida Lake minimum and weighed a very healthy 7lbs. 0ozs. In second place was club walleye guru, Ron Kelly with 2 fish weighing 5 lbs. 10ozs. Jim Arnold cashed his first (and second) Salt City checks after he caught a beautiful 4 lb. 13 oz. walleye that not only gave him third place but also lunker. Club rookie, Jacob Volcko rounded out the top 4 with one walleye weighing 3 lbs. 14 ozs.

Congratulations to all for an exceptional performance under tough conditions. For all the details please make sure you attend the June 6th meeting. We will also be signing up for the club’s first bass points tournament at that time.

Other notable events: Bob Mabee demonstrated to his rookie partner, Doug Herbert how a bass boat doubles as a kiddie-pool and the importance of wearing rain gear even if it doesn’t look like it will rain. Unless Doug had waders on he wasn’t going to keep his feet and legs dry with water pooled up to his lap after Bob tried driving through a wave instead of over it.

Livewells have taken a huge step forward, and in the future they may be called “HAPPY-Wells” thanks to Larry Arnold’s creative thinking. Larry’s custom painted livewells feature a wrap around mural of weeds and rocks guaranteed to make even the most depressed walleye (and eventually bass) happy to be in his boat.

In 2nd place was Craig Terpening, also with a mixed bag, 2 Smallies , 3 Largemouths weighing 13 lbs. 10 ozs., Craig caught on a Senko in 10+ ft of water in weed pockets. 3rd place had Curtis Waterman bring 4 Smallies and 1 Largemouth weighing 13 lbs. 7 ozs. to the scales, Curtis caught on Hard Jerk Baits and Senkos in 12+ ft with rock & weeds. Eric Barker wins his 2nd Club Tournament in a row weighing in 5 Largemouths at 13 lbs. 5 ozs., Eric caught on a Jig & Pig in 5-10 ft of water with scattered rock and weeds. Bill Kooi had a great finish in 2nd place weighing in 5 Largemouths at 13 lbs. 3 ozs., Bill caught on Tubes in very shallow water, because Bill was fishing without a partner and with the wind blowing sooo hard that day Bill lost a few good fish at the boat trying to net them and keep his boat off the rocks at the same time. Mike Sharlow came in 3rd with 5 Largemouths weighing 12 lbs. 8 ozs. , Mike caught on Tubes and Senkos in 2-10 ft of water with rock & weeds. 4th place saw Joe Spicer bring 5 Largemouths to the scales weighing 11 lbs. 12 ozs., Joe caught on Tubes and Senkos in 2-10 ft of water. BOWES MAKES IT TWO IN A ROW

Tournament Director Chris Bowes is off to a GREAT start this Season with his 2nd consecutive win. Not only has he won the 1st two Tournaments, he has also taken the Lunker winnings in both Tournaments. On a hard day of fishing at Sandy Pond Chris managed to bring 5 Largemouths to the scales weighing 11lbs. 4ozs., and take Lunker with a 3lb. 5oz. Largemouth. Chris caught his fish shallow under floating mats on tubes and Jigs. In 2nd place was Jack Harrington weighing in 5 Largemouths at 9lbs. 10ozs., Jack caught his fish in shallow water with weeds on Soft Plastics. 3rd place saw Joe Koetting bring 5 Largemouths to the scales weighing 8lbs. 5ozs. Tournament Results

Pratice time paid big dividens for Tournament Director Chris Bowes at our recent Tournament on Oneida Lake. Chris and his partner Dave Celi both had limits of Smallies very early in the morning and then went to Chris's big fish spot and culled with some nice Largemouths. Top Water baits did in the Smallies and Tubes caught all the Largemouths. Chris's winning weight was 16lbs. 9ozs. Chris also took Lunker with a 4lb. 8oz. Largemouth. Roger Stahl finished in 2nd place with a limit of Largemouths weighing in at 14lbs. 12ozs. Roger caught all of his fish in shallow water on Soft Plastics. 3rd and 4th place finishers were partners Joe Spicer and Keith Cardinale. Joe weighed in 13lbs. even, all Smallies and Keith weighed in 11lbs. 13ozs, also all Smallies, they both caught on Tubes all day. There were 38 Anglers fishing this Tournament and 26 limits brought to the scales. Everyone caught at least 1 fish to weigh in. A bright point at this Tournament was that Dicks Sporting Goods and WSEN Oldies 92 Radio donated $500.00, this was divided up among the top 10 finishers with each receiving a $50.00 Gift Certificate to Dicks Sporting Goods. A down side to the Tournament was that 19 fish died before the weigh in - this problem was discussed at the Club Meeting and all live wells will be iced down for our up coming Tournaments, hopefully this will resolve the problem!

Rusczyk Reels in First Salt City Victory

Salt City
Bassmaster's Oneida Points Tournament was held September 30th out of South Shore launch site. A calm cool morning with water temps in the low to mid 60s greeted the 34 anglers. Thirteen members brought limits to the scales and a total of 232+ pounds of bass were weighed making it one of the best tournaments of the year. Dave Rusczyk's 16 lbs. 3 oz. topped the field when all the fish were weighed. Dave slow rolled spinnerbaits and fished softplastics in an isolated area for an estimated 25 keeper fish.
Matt Martin fishing his first club tournament of the year was not disappointed with 15 lbs. 12 oz. and second place. Matt caught smallmouths on tubes early and then upgraded with jig and pig largemouths later in the day. Third place honors went to Bill Kooi with a 13 lbs. 14 oz. limit of Oneida smallies. Partnered with tournament winner Rusczyk, Bill used tubes to work the same school of fish. Bob Mabee returned from the B.A.S.S. regional in Virginia in time to collect fourth place with 12 lbs. 13 oz. Bob fished white Senkos for a nice bag of smallmouths. Rounding out the top five was Pat O'hern who managed 12 lbs. 11 oz. on a gold spinnnerbait. Lunker award goes to Joe Noffey who used a chrome/blue rattletrap to bag a 4 lb. 12 oz. largemouth.
This ended the point tournament season for 2001. The end of the year results will soon be available. Thanks to all for another successful year.

1000 Isl. Tournament,Aug. 26th 2001Strong gusting winds blew most of the day making boat control very difficult for all 15 boaters and their partners. Fishing for the most part was typical of the 1000 Islands – a lot of short fat fish and no real pattern to follow. Harry Stewart finished in 1st place with a nice bag of 5 largemouths weighing in at 13 lbs. 5 ozs., Harry caught his fish in shallow weeds and shoreline wood using Top water baits, Spinnerbaits and Plastic Worms. In 2nd place was Craig Terpening with 5 largemouths weighing 11 lbs. 6 ozs., Craig reports his early patterns didn’t produce so he went to docks and found quite a few fish willing to bite his flippin tube. In 3rd place is Joe Koetting with 4 largemouths weighing 10 lbs. 3 ozs., Joe says he caught all his fish on soft plastics (wonder what kind??) on shoreline wood and weeds – watch out if Joe ever starts putting that 5th fish in the bag! In 4th place we have Pete Anderson with 5 largemouths weighing 9lbs. 14 ozs., Pete caught a couple early on Top Water and then went to deep weed lines with a Jig & Pig to finish out his limit. Pete banged up his boat on the Hudson River and so Dick Wescott let him use his boat and Dick went along as a non-boater. Lunker was caught by 1st year club member Jack Harrington , a largemouth weighing 4 lbs. 3 ozs.

Anderson Wins at Cayuga, Makes It Two in a Row.

The 36 anglers who fished the July 29th Cayuga found tough mid-summer conditions and only 10 limits were managed. After all the fish had been weighed, Pete Anderson again was at the top of the field. Pete fished mainly a shallow jig and pig presentation to achieve his 14 lbs. 15 oz. winning weight. Second went to Craig Terpening with 13 lbs. 1 oz., including the tournament lunker a beautiful 4 lbs. 1 oz. smallmouth. When Craig's early shallow water bite let him down, he turned to deep weed edges with a tube bait to boat a limit in the last few hours of competition. Club President Mike Cusano was third with 12 lbs. 15 oz. caught deadsticking a soft plastic jerkbait in the 6-8 foot around scattered weeds. Roger Stahl was fourth with 12 lbs. 9 oz. bag of largemouths. Roger caught his fish on a variety of baits and different depths all within sight of the launch. Eric Barker ended up in fifth with a solid limit of 12 lbs. 6 oz. Next Points Tournament is scheduled for August 26th at 1000 Islands and the season concludes at Oneida Lake on September 30th.

2000 Angler of the Year Pete Anderson Returns to Winning Ways

On Sunday, July 15th Salt City Bassmasters’ 42 anglers were greeted with sunny skies and light winds. A brief sun shower and increasing winds forced many to abandon their early patterns. In the end, Pete Anderson topped the field with a mixed bag of lake smallies and bay largemouths. Anderson took advantage of the early morning flat lake and presented tube baits to catch a limit of smallmouths. Then he and partner Ron Kelly turned to docks with a jig and pigs in the afternoon. This combination provided Pete with his 13-lbs. 4-oz. winning weight. Bob Mabee finished second by methodically fishing a plastic worm at the 7-8 ft. depths in the weeds. Bob caught a late day 3 pounder and was able to upgrade his catch to 11-lbs. 1-oz. Last years Sodus winner; Craig Terpening managed 10-lbs. 9-oz. and a respectable third place tie. Craig fished tubes on the weed edges in 10 – 12 ft. This was the same pattern as last year win. The other half of that third place tie was Ron Kelly. Ron managed to work the dock jig and pig bite into a 10-lbs. 9-oz. limit of largemouths? His catch included the 3 lbs. 10 oz. tournament lunker. Rounding out the top 5 was Bill Jackson who had a 9-lbs. 15-oz. limit of lake smallmouths. For all the standings go to the results section of the site. The next points tournament for the club is Cayuga Lake on July 29th.

Cusano Redfield winner, Non boater, O'hern holds off the rest for overall victory
Day two, Redfield Reservoir brought more sun and smaller fish. Eleven members brought in limits with the average fish weighting 1 lb. 9 oz. Lunker on day two went to Steve Stefanko with a 3 lbs. 11 oz. largemouth. Joe Koeting was second with 9 lbs. caught fishing floating worms around flooded timber. Ron Kelly took third place honors. Ron used his “go to bait” a black and blue jig and pig in shallow cover. Bob Mabee and Craig Terpening finished fourth and fifth respectively with 8 lbs. 10 oz. and 8 lbs. 6 oz. Both fished soft plastics for limits.

At the end of the Two Day Tournament Pat O’hern cashed in on his Sandy Pond win and a solid second day at Redfield (6 lbs. 8 oz.) for a two day total of 23 lbs. and 12 oz. and the overall victory. Ron Kelly who was the boater partner for both days winners finished second overall with 21 lbs. 12 oz. Larry Hopkins was third (20 lbs. 8 oz), Joe Spicer was fourth (19 lbs. 6 oz.) and Bob Mabee ended up fifth (18 lbs. 15 oz.). With 41 members fishing it was a great start to the 2001 Salt City Bassmasters Points Tournament Trail. Be sure to come to the next meeting on July 12th to sign up for Sodus and Cayuga and here more specifics about these tournaments.

Club Rookie, Mike Sharlow "Jerks" in Walleye Win ! Bright sun, warm temperatures and light winds greeted the field of 22 anglers on May 20th, 2001. This terrific turnout doubles the previous year’s numbers of entries in the Annual Walleye Tournament. At the end of the day 15 anglers brought fish to the club’s new digital scale for weigh-in. Salt City rookie Mike Sharlow took first place honors with a weight of 7 lbs. 15 oz. He fished jerkbaits in 5-10 feet over emerging weeds. He also collected the lunker purse with a 3 lbs. 15 oz. beauty. Club “young gun” Dave Rusczyk managed second with a limit of nice Oneida walleyes weighing 7 lbs. 9 oz. Jigs tipped with worms were the key for Rusczyk. Tournament Director Chris Bowes squeeked out a third place finish. Bowes caught his 7 lbs. and 5 oz. limit on suspending jerkbaits. Rounding out the top five were Terry Hopkins with 7 lbs. 3 oz. and Larry Arnold with 6 lbs. 8 oz. who fished hair jigs for limits. Great start to another tournament season!

Be sure to attend the club’s next meeting 7:30pm on June 7th at Rapheal’s to hear more about the tournament tactics. Also, the draw for the annual Two Day Tournament (Sandy June 23rd, Redfield June 24th) will be taking place.

Also at the tournament, Pete Anderson earned his first Salt City ANGLER of the YEAR award. While Pete didn't do to well at the last tournament, his 3 consecutive first place finishes through out the season all but assured him of the title. Way to go SUAVEZ!!

Anderson Rules Again
Jackson and Koetting finish 2nd and 3rd from same boat
Pete Anderson brought the lightest "20 lb bag" of bass to the scales the world has ever seen cause when his fish were officially weighed the scale stopped at 16 lbs 5 ozs. Still well enough ahead of his nearest competitor Bill Jackson. Pete's win on Sandy makes it two in a row and although the official stats may not show it, Pete is poised to win his first Salt City angler of the year title.

Bill Jackson and Joe Koetting fishing out of the same boat found 15 lbs 9 ozs and 14 lbs 9 ozs, respectively. Their fish came out of one weed bed. Joe Koetting caught the tournament lunker a 4 lbs 14 oz largemouth.

In fourth place was Craig Terpening who caught fish throughout the whole pond and managed to bring in 13 lbs 8 ozs.

Overall 18 limits where brought in for a 30 angler field.

Terpening Wins Day One
Edges out Chris Bowes for overall
Salt City held its annual two day tournament on July 29th at Sodus Bay and July 30th at Cayuga Lake.

The day one event at Sodus Bay saw Craig Terpening win by over 3 1/2 lbs. Craig brought 5 largemouths to the scale that weighed in at 17 lbs 2 ozs, including the tournament lunker and probable lunker of the year a 6 lb 9 oz largemouth.

In 2nd was Joe Spicer with 13 lbs 11 ozs and in 3rd was Chris Bowes with 12 lbs 11 ozs.

Day two at Cayuga found Terpening needing every last bit of his day one lead. Pete Anderson brought 14 lbs 11 ozs to the scales and claimed the day two title. Matt Martin finished in 2nd place on day two with 14 lbs 4 ozs and the club's youngest member 17 year old Dave (nobody spells my last name right) Rusczyk brought in 13 lbs 3 ozs.

The overall winner was Craig Terpening with 24 lbs 13 ozs, who just edge out Chris Bowes' 24 lbs 8 oz bag (great consistency Chris). Pete Anderson was propelled to 3rd place overall with his day two win and finished with 23 lbs 5 ozs. Rounding out the top four was Joe Spicer with 22 lbs 7 ozs.

The fishing for the two days was better than usual as was the participation. We had 15 and 16 boat fields ... great job guys!!

Mabee "Wimps" Out Victory
1999 A.O.Y. Ron Kelly in 2nd
June 25,2000 Redfield Reservoir was the start of the Salt City Bassmasters point tournament schedule. The entire field agreed that the fish were post spawn, with water temps hovering around 70 degrees.

Bob Mabee started in grand fashion by putting together a limit of largemouths weighing 10 lbs 7 ozs, besting a larger than normal tournament field of 27 anglers. Bob used his standard "wimp worm" 4" Berkley Black/Chart on an 1/8 slider head to catch fish out of shoreline timber behind other anglers.

Second place went to Ron Kelly, the 1999 Angler of the Year, with a limit weighing 10 lbs. 1 oz. Ron used his favorite bait, a black/blue jig/pig and found his fish in the trees as well.

One of our 7 rookie anglers, Bill Barden, brought in a limit of largemouths weighing 9lbs 6ozs. Bill was carolina rigging a black/blue spider grub in 8-10' of water.

In 4th place was Roger Stahl, with a decent limit of 8 lbs 15 ozs. Roger was using spinnerbaits in 2-3' of water.

Another club rookie, Dick Wescott, caught the tournament lunker a 3 lb. 14 oz. largemouth. Besides the lunker, Dick showed off his "diving" skills when he jumped over board to save his partner's rod that had become entangled in a tree. GREAT EFFORT!!

A lot of fish were caught, so make sure to check the results section by going to the upper left hand side of the web page.

Bowes a Walleye Winner Again
Different partner same result
Don't tell Chris Bowes and his partner Curt Waterman that there is a walleye shortage in Oneida Lake. At the club's rescheduled Walleye Opener on June 4th, the pair caught and released over a dozen walleye. When all was said and done they brought a final limit to the scales of 6 fish weighing in at 17 lbs. 15 ozs. Most of their fish came in the 8-10' depth range on a variety of stick baits. Not only did they win but they brought the biggest walleye to the scales, a 3 lb. 6 oz. beauty.

In second place was another strong walleye pair, Ron Kelly and Steve Stefanko. They weighed a limit of 6 fish for a total of 14 lbs. 14 ozs.

Third place went to Howard Krause and Andy Dolch with 5 fish weighing an even 7 lbs.

Great job guys... it was an excellent tune up for the season ahead.

Ron Kelly Is Angler of the Year
Pete Anderson finished one spot better than he did in last year's Oneida Lake tournament, which is pretty good considering he was in second place then. Pete crank baited in a limit of big smallmouth bass, and added to that weight with a couple of kicker largemouths caught on a jig/pig. Pete's bag of five fish weighed 17 lbs 3 ozs.

Matt Martin brought in a very nice limit of fish, 15 lbs 6 ozs, to capture second place. Matt's pattern involved spinnerbaits and jig/pig combinations, much like he did last year.

Third place went to club rookie, Phil Houseknecht, with 14 lbs 14 ozs. He caught most of his fish on a spinnerbait fished over shallow shoals.

Go to the results section for a complete listing of tournament standings.

In the Angler of the Year Race, Ron Kelly, was able to hold onto his lead and become Salt City's 1999 champion. Ron's finished the season with 957.5 points, almost 4 places ahead of his next closest competitors.

Congratulations Ron!!!!

Stefanko Reels in First Win
Stahl's hot streak continues
With a south wind blowing, many anglers were able to leave Sodus Bay. One boat that made the decision was Roger Stahl and Steve Stefanko, and it paid of big dividends. Steve Stefanko won his first Salt City tournament with five fish weighing 16 lbs 2 ozs including tournament lunker, a 5 lb. 6 oz. largemouth, and in second place was his boat partner, Roger Stahl, with five fish weighing 13 lbs 2 ozs.

Third place went to Joe Spicer with a limit weighing 11 lbs 1 oz. Four nice fish were enough to put Howard Krause in fourth place with 9 lbs 5 ozs. Rounding out the top five was Harry Stewart with 8 lbs 12 ozs for five fish.

Make sure to attend the Oct. 7th meeting to hear the patterns these anglers used to catch their fish.

Mabee Earns Come From Behind Victory
Rookie P. Houseknecht ties for second
Bob Mabee of Manlius, overcame a 3 1/2 lb deficit on Sunday by catching a five fish limit weighing 11lbs 1oz. Bob's fish came on a zara spook in the morning and once that pattern slowed, he went to the wimp worm (4" worm). Bob reported catching 17+ fish throughout the day. On Black Lake (day one), Bob only caught one fish, but it was a 5lb 0oz beauty of a largemouth which was good for second place. That coupled with his day two performance allowed him to capture the Two Day Overall Champion Title.

Fishing his first tournaments of the year, Phil Houseknecht of Cortland showed no signs of nervousness. Day one he brought a 4lb 12oz fish to the scales and on day two, he caught 4 fish including that day's tournament lunker a 4lb 15oz largemouth.
Phil's two day total of 14lbs 4ozs earned him a 2nd place tie.

BLACK LAKE DAY 1: A 5lb 11oz largemouth anchored Mike Cusano's two fish bag of 8lbs 7ozs and earned him the day one title. However, Mike could only muster up 3 fish on day two that weighed 5lbs 13 ozs and settled for a 2nd place tie. All of Mike's fish came on a black/blue jig/pig combo off of fallen timber or docks. His 5lbs 11oz fish is currently leading the lunker of the year honors.

Howard Krause of Baldwinsville, placed 4th on day one and 5th on day two with a total weight of 13lbs 3ozs. He captured 4th place overall and we'll have to wait until the club's meeting to find out how he caught his fish.

Rounding out the top 5 overall was Ron Kelly of Liverpool. Ron zipped on the first day, as did half the field, but he came back strong on the St. Lawrence with a five fish limit weighing 9lbs 4ozs. Ron's fish came on a 1/2 oz jig/pig in weeds.

Make sure you come to the meeting to hear more about how the fish were caught.

Cold Front Shuts Down Sandy Pond
One of Salt City Bassmasters favorite stops is Sandy Pond. Many longer term members tell stories of 21+ pounds of Largemouths being brought to the scales or of times when a 16 pound bag wouldn't put you in the top five.

Everyone loves Sandy.... except during a cold front!

When a front moves in on the Pond, most angler's brace for a long day. Of the 17 that fished, only 9 were able to bring one or more fish to the scale. One person that didn't struggle was Ron Kelly. He weighed 5 fish for a respectable 13lbs 9ozs. While we'll have to wait for the meeting to get the full story, preliminary indications say Ron just slowed down and fished what he does best, a jig/pig in and around shallow weeds and docks.

Second place went to Terry Hopkins, with 5 fish weighing 11lbs 12ozs. Terry and his boat partner, 4th place finisher Steve Stefanko, had tried worms with little success but found that the Berkley Power Craw appeared to be more to the bass' liking. They probed scattered grass flats in 10'-11' of water. While Stefanko weighed only 2 fish, they went a whopping 7lbs 11ozs.

Howard Krause, fishing his first tournament of the year, came in 3rd place with 8lbs 9ozs for 3 fish (almost a 3lb average).

Rounding out the top 5 was Joe Spicer, 4 fish weighing 7lbs 6ozs.

While Stefanko, had 2 nice fish, Bob Mabee snuck in a 5lb 3oz beauty for tournament lunker honors. Bob's fish came on a 4" Berkley Power Worm on 8lb. test line. Nice job getting that big mama in!!

Stop out at the Salt City meeting,7:30pm Aug. 5th at Rapheal's Restaurant, Lakeland, for more details about the top anglers fish catching patterns.

Bowes and Stewart Win Walleye Opener
May 23, 1999 - Chris Bowes and Harry Stewart captured the Salt City Walleye Opener with a 6 fish bag weighing 10lbs.3 ozs. They also bagged the tournament lunker with a nice 3lb. 8oz fish.

The format of this tournament was a little different than past Walleye tourneys. The contestants were paired via a blind draw, with the two anglers fishing as a team. Another unique twist was that they could fish any body of water they wanted, as long as they made it back to DG's restaurant, Brewerton, NY, by 4:00 pm.

The first place team of Bowes/Stewart decided to fish Oneida Lake, while some other teams gambled on the big walleye located in Oswego Harbor. As it turned out, only one fish was weighed in by the two teams that ventured North (a 2lb. 6oz. fish), all the rest came out of Oneida Lake..

Rounding out the top 4 was Ron Kelly/Mike Fragola, 6 fish weighing 9lbs 5ozs, which was good for 2nd Place, Dave Celi/Mike Cusano, 2 fish weighing 4lbs 13ozs (3rd Place), and in 4th Place, Larry Hopkins/Steve Stefanko, 1 fish weighing 2lbs 6ozs.

To find out the patterns used to catch these fish, show up at the Salt City Bassmaster's June Meeting (6/3/99) at Rapheal's restaurant on State Fair Blvd.
